Med EP’en “Interpretations Of Three Psychedelic Rock Songs From Around The World” (2005) føjede gruppens deres umiskendelige psykedeliske twists til deres musik og udvidede således paletten betragteligt.

What can the audience expect from the show?
“This is the first European tour with the recently revamped lineup (including AE Paterra of Zombi/Majeure and Ilyas Ahmed). It’s a looser, jazzy-er, and musically broad version of the band. Exciting times for us.”

What do you think of the other act this evening, Ilyas Ahmed?
“Well… He’s a member of Grails. So I guess he’s pretty ok. Ilyas has been quietly releasing great records for a long time and has a cult audience all over the world. He’s also collaborated with Grouper in the past. We’re grateful to have him on board.”

What merch do you bring?
“Yeah, we have a ton of merch. We’ve been releasing records now for 15+ years and have been very busy in that time. It’s literally a lifetime of work that’s on the merch table.”

Which song do you prefer performing live?
“A certain portion of the set is improvised and changes night by night. That’s probably the part that we look forward to the most… Sometimes it’s great and sometimes it falls apart, but that tension keeps things interesting on stage.”

How have your most recent concerts been?
“They’ve been great. We’re having more fun playing each night than perhaps ever before.”

How would you describe your bandmates?
“Pillars of the community. Friends to animals and children. Keepers of the faith.”

Which live act (band and/or artist) is your favorite – and why?
“A band that is currently active? My standard answer is Circle from Finland. They’re probably the world’s greatest cult band. They’re uncompromisingly creative, musically omnivorous, and totally hilarious. And they absolutely kill live. I saw them last year at Stengade in Kbh for probably the 12th time, and it was the best one yet.”

How would you describe your latest album, “Chalice Hymnal”?
“Maybe… an attempted hybridization of European film music with ambient electronica and psychedelic rock(?). That’s the egghead answer, anyway. The only thing that actually matters is that it’s fun to listen to; maybe with headphones, and maybe in a slightly altered state.”

What are your plans for the summer and autumn?
“After this tour we’re all heading back to our respective corners of the west (New York, Copenhagen, Denver, Portland, Pittsburgh) for the summer, then meeting up again in September/October to play a few shows and then convene on Emil’s family property in the backwoods of Georgia to begin work on a new record.”

Anmeldercitater
“Chalice Hymnal is Grails’ kinkiest record to date but that doesn’t mean there ain’t an underlying poignant melancholy to their chameleonic offerings, just like that sadness behind the eyes of the man who’s been carnally distracted from fixing the kitchen appliance.” (Record Collector, 2017 – læs hele anmeldelsen)

“Not only is Chalice Hymnal well worth the wait, it makes it even harder to choose which album is the pinnacle of Grails’ ever-fascinating discography.” (AllMusic, 2017 – læs hele anmeldelsen)

“Grails have been many things over the last 15 years, but with Chalice Hymnal, they seem to have found an identity that fits them perfectly.” (MusicOMH.com, 2017 – læs hele anmeldelsen)

“Chalice Hymnal travels extensively across its eleven songs, yet it also becomes a contained cycle.” (PopMatters, 2017 – læs hele anmeldelsen)

Ilyas Ahmed
Pakistansk-fødte Ilyas Ahmed sammenfletter klassiske sanger/sangskriver-dyder og mere eksperimenterende tendenser.
