Om Joan As Police Woman

Interview med Joan As Police Woman
What can the audience expect from the show?
“We are playing the new record “Let It Be You” and have reimagined many of the songs from the previous four records. The musicians are the ones who played on the record: Ian Chang – radically talented drummer, Ryan Dugre – the most wicked guitarist, Benjamin Lazar Davis – singing, electric bass, moog, mellotron, and me – singing, keys, guitar. The shows have been going SO WELL! Can’t wait to play at VoxHall!”

Tell us about Benjamin Lazar Davis!?
“We met at a show of Ben’s band Cuddle Magic. I loved his sense of rhythm and I found that he was a fan. We decided to try to write together. When we did, it happened so easily and after not so long we had written a record. Ben is a singularly amazing musician. We love writing, recording and performing together.”

What merch do you bring?
“We’ve got tons of 180gram vinyl! We’ve got gorgeous t-shirts. We’ve got bags. We’ve got baby bunnies. Ok. We don’t have baby bunnies.”

Which song do you prefer performing live?
“The new record is a blast to play live. It’s still very fresh to play these songs and the new arrangements are slaying. This band live is so tight!”

How has the tour been so far?
“It’s been incredible. We did eight UK shows in a row. We played live on the BBC. We had spectacular shows in Rome, Milan, Bologna, Vienna & Zürich. The VoxHall show will be the second to final date of this tour so we will be ready to throw down!”

25 years into your career what does touring mean to you?
“Playing live is my lifeblood. It’s the beauty of intangibility. It’s the feeling when the music is surrounding everyone and that moment that lasts forever.”

How would you describe your new album, “Let It Be You”?
“It’s the combination of organic and opposing heavily processed sounds that create fantastic new textures. We used Central African Republic Pygmy people’s flute patterns as inspiration. Ben and I have both spent time separately in various parts of Africa and love the music. It’s dance-y. It’s pop songs! It’s love songs!”

What are your plans for the rest of 2016 – and 2017?
“We finish this European tour in Copenhagen. We play a homecoming show on December 11th at Baby’s Alright in Brooklyn. I will be heading to Morocco for the rest of the year and will return after the new year. I have been working on the new Joan As Police Woman record and will be working all day and night to finish it through January and February. Then we continue with the “Let It Be You” tour in March and hit Ireland, Spain, Italy, Austria, Portugal. That’s up still April… Stay tuned for more!”

Anmeldercitater
“While the album’s brightness may take some getting used to, listeners who love her music for how well she expresses feelings that are universal yet hard to articulate will appreciate how vividly The Classic captures joy and what it takes to get it.” (All Music Guide, 2014 – læs hele anmeldelsen)

“There are hooks and tunes galore, and whether you’re looking for destructive enormity or a quaint Sunday morning soundtrack, you’ll find it in this album somewhere.” (MusicOMH.com – læs hele anmeldelsen)

“Too much is still being worked through, though, for this to be the exhilarating, post-depression party its best music suggests.” (The Independent, 2014 – læs hele anmeldelsen)
